Just five minutes’ walk from Ordsall is mediacity:UK, the UK’s first purpose-built media community and Salford’s answer to Silicon Valley.

The £1.5bn development in Salford Quays will see an explosion of new media and creative industries to rival that of any other media city in the world such as those in Dubai and Seoul.

Shoppers will be able to take advantage of hundreds of new retail outlets set within a new network of tightly knit streets, squares and boulevards cascading down into a huge waterfront piazza.

When the first phase opens in 2011 it will be home to more than 2,500 BBC employees and a new higher education campus for the University of Salford.

In total, the site is expected to cater for more than 1,000 media companies employing around 15,000 people. In addition, a state-of-the-art academy is due to open in Ordsall in 2011 specialising in media education.
